Inbox

The inbox keeps a record of everything that happens to your lord. It is sorted into seven tabs. The Inbox button in the top bar shows how many entries you have not read yet. Opening a tab marks everything in it as read.

The basics

TabWhat lands there
LettersLetters from other lords, and a copy of each letter you send
VassalageRequests to be your vassal, answers to your own requests, and every bond made or broken. The tab also lets you manage your liege and vassals (see Vassalage)
ScoutingEvery scout and spy report, with a button that opens the full reports; each army a watching spy sees; reports your Spymaster shares with your guild or a body above it (see Espionage)
BattlesEvery battle report, with a button to watch the replay; dispatches from your armies; warnings when a lord marches on one of your villages; spies caught on either side and sabotage done or suffered; bounties paid to you, claimed from you, or put on your head (Bounties)
Trade ledgerEvery market sale and purchase with its price and market tax, caravans you send and where they unload, caravans other lords send to you, lords' orders posted, filled, cancelled or expired, every step of a delivery contract, and carts robbed on the road. The tab opens with a summary of the last 7 game days per good: bought, sold and net gold (see Markets), and gold put up for bounties and refunded
World eventsEvery realm event as it starts and ends, capitals sacked or held, wars and pacts that involve your guild or the bodies above it, and every monk's mission and its effect, yours or one done to you (Faith)
Game newsNews posted by the realm's stewards, and a welcome note for new lords
  • Each tab keeps its newest 100 entries. Older ones are dropped.
  • You can delete one entry, or clear a whole tab.
  • The search box under the tabs finds entries in the open tab by title, text or the lord they came from or went to. The list beside it narrows the tab to losses and warnings, entries with a report or link, or letters you sent.
  • "Mark all read" marks every entry in every tab read at once. Its count is the unread total.
  • Losses and threats are shown with a red headline: a lost battle, a raid, a lord marching on you, a declined request, a vassal who renounced you.

Letters

  • Open the Letters tab and press "Write a letter". You can also use "Write a letter" on another lord's profile or on their village's map card.
  • Address the letter by the lord's name. Capitals do not matter.
  • The subject can be up to 80 characters and the body up to 2,000.
  • Each lord can send one letter every 10 seconds.
  • You cannot write to yourself.
  • "Reply" starts a letter back to the sender, with "Re:" added to the subject.

Forwarding reports

A battle or scout report can be sent on as a letter. Press "Forward" on its entry, then choose:

  • To a lord: by name, as for a letter.
  • To my guild: every other member of your guild gets it as a letter, and a line in the guild chat tells them it is in their inbox. You need to be in a guild.

You can add a note; it goes above the report's own text. The letter's subject is "Fwd: " and the report's title, cut to 80 characters. You keep a read copy addressed to the lord or the guild.

The letter carries the report itself. "Watch battle" plays the same replay you saw; "Read scout report" shows what the scout saw when it was there, with a button to find the spot on the map. Neither can be acted on: a forwarded scout report cannot be used to plan an attack. A lord who received a report can forward it again, and it stays the same report.

Rules:

  • Forwarding counts as a letter for the rate limit: one every 10 seconds.
  • Only entries in your own inbox with a battle or scout report can be forwarded.
  • A forwarded battle opens as long as the replay is kept on the server. A forwarded scout report is copied when it is sent, so it opens even after it drops out of the sender's own list. The server forgets a forwarded report 30 days after it was first sent.

Alerts while away

Entries that call for it (an army marching on you, a siege, a battle report, a capture, letters, vassalage) can raise a browser notification while you are away. It is off until you turn it on from the Alerts while away section under the Inbox tabs; see Sieges and strongholds.

Interactions

  • World map: scout reports are still kept in the Reports panel (the newest 25). The inbox keeps its own line for each report, up to 100.
  • Military and Battles: battle reports are still kept in the Army panel (the newest 30). From the inbox, "Watch battle" opens the same replay.
  • Markets: the ledger records a trade when the order is placed, because gold and goods change hands then. The carts bring the result home later.
  • Realm events: the alerts still show when they happen. The inbox keeps them afterwards.
  • Guilds and Houses: the diplomacy log in the Realm panel is unchanged. The inbox copies each new line to everyone who would see it there.

For maintainers

  • Server: server/src/features/inbox/index.ts. Other features post through inboxApi.post and inboxApi.postAll in server/src/features/registry.ts. Boxes are kept in meta key inbox_v1 and saved on the tick after any change.
  • Protocol: packages/protocol/src/features/inbox.ts. The client gets inbox (the whole box) on connect and after a read or delete, and inboxEntry for each new entry.
  • The places that post entries are scout reports (wiring.ts); battle reports, dispatches and march warnings (military/index.ts: addReport, dispatch, sendArmy); trades and caravans (market/index.ts: trade, sendCaravan, deliver, cartFought); orders and contracts (market/exchange.ts); realm events (realmEvents/index.ts); diplomacy (Realm.onLog, set in social/index.ts); vassalage (vassals/index.ts); spies, sabotage and shared intel (spies/index.ts); faith (faith/index.ts); and bounties (bounties/index.ts).
  • Admins post game news with the newsPost message.
  • Forwarding: forwardReport and openShare in server/src/features/inbox/index.ts, messages reportForward and reportOpen. A share (shares in inbox_v1) records the report kind, the battle id or a copy of the scout report, and the lords who may open it; letters link to it with { kind: "forward" }. A battle opens as a replay message, which the military client plays as usual; a scout report comes back as sharedScoutReport. Shares are dropped after 30 days (SHARE_KEEP_MS). Tests: server/src/features/maptools/maptools.test.ts.
  • Client: clients/web/src/features/inbox/. Other panels open things through window events: vk:open-battle, vk:open-scout-reports, vk:open-lord, vk:open-realm-tab and vk:open-inbox.
