Quests

Quests are a guided chain of tasks from your village steward. Each one asks for something specific (build a woodcutter, set taxes, send a scout), and once it is done you claim a reward: Renown, goods, gold, cards, card packs and sometimes an unlock token that opens a new building. Today there is one chain of 18 quests, which walks a new lord from founding a village to the rank of Freeman.

The basics

  • One quest is open at a time. The next opens only after you claim the current one.
  • The server checks your progress every few seconds. When every condition of a quest holds at the same moment, the quest becomes ready, and it stays ready even if things change afterwards (popularity drops, food runs out).
  • Claim it to collect the rewards. Nothing is paid until you claim.
  • Goods and gold go into your first village and stop at its storage limit, so claim when there is room.
  • The first five quests pay 155 Renown together, which carries you past Freeman (100). The first quest alone (25) is enough for Cottar (5), which unlocks scouts.
  • Claiming Village Life lets you build Maypoles. Claiming A Varied Table lets you build Gardens.

The main chain

"Card" below means one random common card (or 30 gold if it cannot be given). All quests are in the main chain.

#QuestConditions (all at once)Rewards

10A Varied Table2 kinds of food in one granaryunlock quest:gardens, 40 gold, 45 Renown, card

17Rise to Villeinrank 3Merchant's Chest pack (or 150 gold), 100 wood, 50 stone
18A Freeman's Holdingrank 4 and 40 peasants in all200 gold, 80 Renown, 2 random uncommon cards (or 120 gold)

Totals for the whole chain if every card reward is delivered:

RewardTotal
Renown770
Gold480
Wood320
Stone130
Apples100
Common cards11
Uncommon cards2
Card packsPeasant's Bundle (3 cards), Merchant's Chest (4 cards)

Renown arithmetic for the opening, counting quest rewards only: quest 1 pays 25, which makes you a Serf (15). Quest 2 brings you to 55, a Villein (40), and quest 4 to 120, a Freeman (100). After quest 5 you hold 25 + 30 + 30 + 35 + 35 = 155, so quest 6 (rank 1) is ready on the next check, and the rank conditions of quests 15, 17 and 18 are already met by the time you reach them. All 18 quests together give 770 Renown, which on its own takes you past Yeoman (330) but not to Reeve (1,200).

Some quests need things the chain does not itself unlock: the Chapel needs the Devotion research, the ale quest needs a Brewery (Brewing research) feeding a staffed Inn. See research.md.

Conditions in detail

Counts are summed over all your villages. Levels and scores use your best single village.

ConditionValue the server reads
villagesnumber of villages you own
buildingCountbuildings of that type in all villages; only finished ones (active or idle) count unless the quest says otherwise
populationpeasants summed over all villages
popularitythe highest popularity total among your villages
rationsAtLeastthe ration level of the best village that has more than 0.5 of some food in its granary; 0 if none does
aleServedthe ale level of the best village with a finished, staffed Inn holding more than 0.5 ale; 0 otherwise
taxAtLeastthe highest tax level among your villages
foodVarietythe most kinds of food (more than 0.5 of each) in any one village
renownyour Renown, floored
rankyour rank level

eventa lifetime counter (below)

Progress shown in the quest panel is each condition's value capped at its target.

Event counters

Some quests count things reported by other features. The counters are lifetime totals, kept from the moment you start playing, so events that happened before a quest opened still count.

Claiming and rewards

  • You can only claim a quest that is ready. Claiming twice gives the error "Already claimed."
  • A quest whose rewards include goods, gold, cards or a pack cannot be claimed until you own a village ("Found a village first.").
  • Goods go into your first village (the first in your village list), and gold into your treasury. Each good is filled up to that village's storage capacity and the rest is lost; gold has no cap. If a store is already over capacity, nothing is taken away.
  • Renown rewards go through the normal grant, so your rank updates at once and research points for any new rank follow on the next tick. See ranks-and-renown.md.
  • A "cards" reward draws that many random cards of the rarity. If your hand would go past the hand limit of 40, you get the fallback gold instead.
  • A "cardPack" reward rolls the pack as if bought, for free. It does not check the hand limit. If the cards feature were unavailable, the fallback gold would be paid.

Unlock tokens

Claiming any quest gives the token quest:<quest id>. A quest can also give extra tokens through an unlock reward. Buildings list tokens in requires:

TokenComes fromOpens
quest:village_lifeclaiming Village Life (quest 13)Maypole (+1 popularity, +2 more within 10 tiles of the hall, up to 4)
quest:gardensclaiming A Varied Table (quest 10)Garden (+1 popularity within 8 tiles of the hall, up to 6)

Both buildings still need rank 1 (Cottar). Tokens are rebuilt from your claimed quests each time your player state is sent, so they cannot be lost.

Messages

  • claimQuest { questId } claims a ready quest.
  • quests { quests, progress } carries your quest state (ready, done, counters) and the current values for each open quest. It is sent on connect, after a claim, and on a tick only when something changed.
  • questReady { questId } is sent the moment a quest's conditions are met.
